...is an old Slavic saying about the festive week before Lent. In Ukraine we say that this is a time where on Monday one absolutely must meet with neighbors, bosses, subordinates, and partners. Tuesday## is best for putting temptation in someone's way. Wednesday highlights the culinary, and one should consume as much as one wants of the meat and dairy products forbidden during Lent. Throughout the week are a wide range of festive traditional folk dances. On Saturday the week turns solemn with remembrances of those no longer among the living, to pray that we will meet again in heaven. On Sunday, the last day of Shrovetide, we are to cleanse our hearts of grievances against others, making peace with one and all. They say that this is a day you can even make peace with your mother-in-law, eat with her tasty pancakes with a delicious aroma, and that the golden hue of the pancakes and their warmth within are like the golden warmth of the spring sun, which Shrovetide ushers in.
