The Jewish community of Ukraine, the world's fifth largest, is celebrating Purim, one of their most important holidays. The Jews started celebrating it back in the fourth century BC and like most Jewish holidays relates to Biblical events. On Purim it is hard to find a man in serious or sad mood: Purim begins with a solemn ceremony in the synagogue or a home, followed by alms-giving, and ending with a celebration banquet at which the wine flows freely.
