28 September, 1999 - 00:00

Head of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Borys Oliynyk has officially handed over to the PACE leadership the appeal by the Kaniv Four to monitor the situation in this country during the election campaign Verkhovna Rada Speaker Oleksandr Tkachenko announced last Tuesday during the legislative session.

The Speaker quoted Mr. Oliynyk as saying that the four's appeal was accepted with understanding, and a large group of experts will be sent to Ukraine to observe the democratic course of the presidential elections.

As The Day reported previously, on September 14 four presidential candidates — Oleksandr Moroz, Oleksandr Tkachenko, Yevhen Marchuk, and Volodymyr Oliynyk, who had signed in Kaniv an agreement on cooperation in the election campaign, requested PACE to monitor the pre-election situation in Ukraine and determine whether it meets the European standards of democracy.
