Kievskie Vedomosti Again Suspends Publication

2 March, 1999 - 00:00

The Kievskie Vedomosti staff suspended the publication of the newspaper
on Monday citing "financial and organizational problems."

The newspaper was closed because its bank account had long been frozen,
as the publication had been repeatedly sued for exorbitant amounts, says
the announcement of the newspaper staff. On the other hand, the Soyuzdruk
distribution agency refused to sign a contract with the newspaper for this
year, which caused sales to plummet. Earlier, the editorial board was evicted
from its leased premises by an Arbitration Court decision and continued
to put out the newspaper in poorly suited premises.

The current conditions have reflected Kievskie Vedomosti's financial
plight, with the staff getting no pay since last November. The newspaper
workers think "a cardinal decision about the destiny of Ukraine's first
private daily must be made by its stockholders."
