Kruty: 86 Years Later

Ukraine’s leaders laid wreaths on the memorial sign to the Heroes of Kruty at Askold’s Grave in Kyiv to commemorate the 86th anniversary of the battle of Kruty. President Leonid Kuchma, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, Chairman of Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn, along with other official, took part in the ceremony, reports Interfax Ukraine.

The heroes’ memory was honored with a moment of silence. The State Anthem was played in their honor and soldiers of the Guards of Honor of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine marched past the monument. The wreaths were interweaved with bands reading “To the heroes of Kruty who died for Ukraine’s independence.” The All-Ukrainian Students’ Council and Students’ Union also laid wreaths on the monument. The mournful date was also marked in Chernihiv oblast where the historic battle took place: a meeting- requiem was held there and the Lessons of Courage and soirees to commemorate the patriots conducted in the oblast educational institutions.
