On May 5 in the Institute of International Relations twenty people were awarded prizes in the contest, What Kind of Constitution Does Europe Need? In this way Ukraine, a junior member of the Council of Europe, celebrated Europe Day for the first time in its history. Back in 1950 the French Foreign Minister of France Robert Schuman initiated the integration process in Western Europe in a speech delivered on May 9, now observed as Europe Day throughout Europe. For us, native Ukrainians, May 9 is still Victory Day, the day, when the Soviet people defeated the Germans in the World War II. Germans, French, Italians, and British who fought against each other back then, now celebrate the continent’s unity. Though under the pressure of economic crisis, Ukraine continues to celebrate Victory Day.
