The march of miners exercising their legal right to demand their back pay is unprecedented in Ukraine’s history. In any case The Day’s correspondent met the caravan of reproach against the government at the border of Kyiv and Cherkasy oblasts between Zolotonosha and Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky.
It was hot, and nearly a thousand marchers were stripped to the waist, unshaven, and sweating, covering an average of four kilometers an hour or 30 kilometers a day, their banner carrying the initials of the Independent Miners’ Union of Ukraine. In front of the marchers were some automobiles from the State Auto Inspections. Onlookers shout their support and solidarity. In the Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky forest, the pilgrims halted to await their comrades and eat.
