Last year’s pictures

The National Museum of Ukrainian Literature is currently hosting an exhibit of photographs taken in Ukraine last year. It comprises 90 works by 58 authors. A jury decided which photos should be shown to the audience. Considering that the competition received over 800 works by 188 authors, the jury had quite a bit of work to do. As the organizers claim, the union’s work has changed considerably over the past few years. The gimcrack depictions of the native land, drabness and phony social reporting that characterized previous works are now a thing of the past.

The date of the union’s annual forum now nearly coincides with its anniversary — the union will celebrate its 21st birthday on December 9.

One of the exhibit new features is the emphasis on portrait and sport photography. New names have also made their appearance. The union’s new members include Yana Arkhanhelska, Oleksandr Khvorost, Iryna Olonicheva, Dmytro Petryna and many other talented photo-artists. Some of them have already won their first prizes. The jury recognized Yana Arkhanhelska’s work as being best in the “Black and White” category. Eduard Khytry from Rivne took the gold medal in the “Color” section, Anatolii Hleb was the best among the “Portrait” section, and Oleksandr Khvorost from Ivano-Frankivsk won in the “Sports” category. The exhibit will be open until December 3.
