The wave of manifestations that rolled last Wednesday throughout Ukraine
was not as crowded as the initiators of the "fall offensive" had expected.
In Odesa leftist leaders called for "changing the social-economic structure
in the interests of the working people." The meeting at Kulykovo field
was attended by nearly 300 Communists, Socialists, and representatives
of the All-Ukrainian Workers Union - not the 2,000 which was expected.
In Kherson, 150 pensioners and jobless people supported the Russian
brothers and protested against "the authorities who had robbed the people."
In Luhansk oblast there were demands not only to dismiss the President
like those in other regions, but also the Minister of the Interior along
with the Head of the oblast militia because of the conflict with striking
miners this August.
The most unusual proved to be the protest which manifested in Zhytomyr.
Oblast Governor Arkhyp Voitenko went out to the participants in the crowd
and explained the current crisis with the activities of the central authorities,
leaving the gathering with applause.
