The Presidium of the Congress of Ukrainian Intellectuals discussed three presidential candidates for the 1999 marathon: People’s Deputy Ivan Drach, ex-Defense Minister Kostiantyn Morozov, and Petro Kononenko, Director of the Kyiv Shevchenko National University Institute for Ukrainian Studies, reports UNIAN.
The three candidacies will be submitted for approval by the CUI National Council in October-November and to regional conferences, and the second congress scheduled for March 1999. The Presidium does not rule out the possibility of other nominations.
As earlier anticipated by The Day, the main candidates confirming their participation will signal the start of mass nominating. The Presidential Administration might well encourage this process (three candidates per organization) in hopes of preventing the strongest rivals from vying in the second round of the elections.
