The ratification of the Ukrainian-Russian friendship, cooperation, and partnership treaty has been put off until June.
Interfax-Ukraine was informed by State Duma Speaker Gennadi Selezniov that the postponement was caused by the need to “clarify the Ukrainian Parliament’s position, considering the Ukrainian Foreign Minister’s latest statement.” In fact, Mr. Tarasiuk made several statements concerning Ukrainian-NATO prospects. Mr. Selezniov sent a letter to Kyiv, requesting explanations from Parliament. After the Ukrainian Parliament’s response Russian legislators will resume the ratification debates. Needless to say, Moscow would favor a reply assuring it that Kyiv will not join NATO.
