NDP Makes Valiant Attempt to Become a Political Party

19 January, 00:00
Last year's political hit was certainly the announcement of NDP's (People's Democratic Party) demands on Leonid Kuchma, making it clear that its support of his candidacy will depend whether or not he measures up.

Regrettably, many an analyst regard this step as yet another political intrigue meant to make the best of a bad bargain. NDP, they claim, will back the President anyway, but it has to make noises for appearance's sake. Perhaps, but this does not change the situation. Be it as it may, NDP was the first non-leftist party to voice its claims to the current President, and in the most critical context of the coming elections. This was not another dishing out of the vague criticism so often heard from the Center. This time it was a statement specifying what the party did not like about the President. However, after this resolute act of publicizing what it needs from the President, some NDP leaders stated that Mr. Kuchma is still, after all, the only leader worth supporting, and the problem of clarifying its stand  publicly remains, one, it is important to stress, which is especially interesting, because NDP is still considered the party of power, accused of backstage scheming. It is possible that this sally is a make-believe, yet the party has taken a step toward assuming real party status, especially against the unimpressive centrist backdrop, for Centrists would simply never have the fortitude to try anything similar.
