Will “East-West” Help Us?

The Kyiv House of Cinematography hosted a French film week called Various Facets of the French Cinema. The program was organized by the French Embassy in Ukraine and the French Cultural Center on the occasion of French President Jacques Chirac's state visit to Ukraine. The films shown in Kyiv were new, all having been made between 1995 and 1997. The program offers a wide range of cinema genres, from historical chronicles to psychological thrillers.

One wonders if there would be enough Ukrainian films to organize the same kind of program on the occasion of President Kuchma's visit to France. Most Ukrainian-made films are currently co-productions. One such movie, East-West, was discussed at the press conference on the opening of the week. Giles Chaprone, the Vive France Cinema Union representative in Eastern Europe, noted that the shooting of the film, which is a joint production of France, Ukraine, and Russia, is complicated by the unsatisfactory technical conditions at the Dovzhenko Film Studio (formerly one of Europe's best), whose services the producers had to recently turn down.

Daewoo Makes Televisions

The first sixth generation Orizon TV-set has been manufactured in Smila, Cherkasy oblast. Orizon is the product of Ukrainian-Korean joint project, launched by the Daewoo Corp. and Orizon Ukrainian television manufacturing plant. They plan to manufacture 2,500 new TV-sets by the end of the month and another 20,000 by the end of the year. Presently the plant only assembles TV-sets in Ukraine using Korean components from Daewoo Electronics. Oblast governor Anatoly Danylenko supported plant director Volodymyr Sirenko's suggestion to launch a closed production line to manufacture domestic parts and assemble them, The Day correspondent Yevhen Bruslynovsky reports.

Investments in Ukraine to Keep Up Volume

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development does not intend to cut its volume of investments in Ukraine because to the crisis on the Russian financial market, Chairman of the EBRD Kyiv Office Yaroslav Kinakh informed Interfax-Ukraine. In particular he said that EBRD intends to attract foreign investors to launch joint projects in the private and state sectors. According to Kinakh, another EBRD project for the development of small and medium businesses will be launched after Parliament ratifies it.
