People's Deputy Oleh Kukharchuk Found Dead

Last Wednesday late at night 50 year old People's Deputy Oleh Kukharchuk was found dead in his private house in Moscow district of Kyiv.

Internal Affairs Ministry public relations service officially reported to The Day that "the People's Deputy died due to the careless treatment of firearms." Unofficial sources report he died from a shot into his chest made by a domestic mark TT pistol, which belonged to him. After careful investigation, the police found a number of cold and firearms. The police wonder why would the deputy need so many guns at home. The homicide department of Internal Ministry noted they consider he died accidentally and not due to political or commercial reasons.

Before running for Parliament Oleh Kukharchuk was Chairman of Board of the Ukrhazbut Co. He was a member of the People's Democratic Party.

A Procession in Honor of the Most Gracious Savior

In the Christian calendar August 14 marks the ceremony of the Procession of the cross. By custom a cross is taken from the cathedral in Constantinople and carried through the streets "in order to enlighten the people," bless the land and water, ant in order to heal the sick. This day specially honors the Most Gracious Savior and the Holy Virgin. It is also connected with the victory of Russian Prince Andrei Bogoliubsky over the Volga Bolgars, when the prince prevailed thanks to the miraculous intervention of icons of the Savior and Virgin Mary. August 14 also inaugurated the Uspensky Lent, a time of prayer, cleansing of the spirit, and repentance. Let us all repent our sins...

State Statistics Committee Reports Consumer Basket Cheapens

The average cost of consumer's basket consisting of 22 essential food products is reported to be Hr 64.89 per person per month in Ukraine's state food stores network as of August 4. Compared to July 24 this was down 3%. The market cost of the basket was Hr 62.29, which is 4% cheaper than in state food stores.

The State Statistics Committee reported to Interfax-Ukraine, that the difference between the maximum and minimum cost of the basket in Ukrainian regions was almost 50%.

The basket was most expensive in Crimea, (Hr 78.61) and cheapest in Ternopil oblast (Hr 52.42). In Kyiv the basket cost reportedly cost Hr 66.86, which is ninth place in the top ten list of most expensive areas.
