Newspaper of the year

10 March, 00:00
The second annual Person of the Year nationwide program on March 7 named Den Ukraine’s most outstanding periodical publication of 1997. Last year’s winner in this category was Kyiv’s weekly Zerkalo Nedeli (Mirror of the Week). Larysa Ivshyna, editor-in-chief of Den (The Day), pointed out that her predecessor had also deserved the prize, but that while Zerkalo made people think once a week, Den has striven to do so every day.

Hryhory Pocheptsov, who accepted the award on behalf of Den, stated, «A newspaper is like a woman. She can be attractive, interesting, boring, and just like a woman she struggles to win hearts. Thus, in distinction from politicians who try to win our affections once every four years, a newspaper has to find a way to our hearts every day. And day in and day out, it’s hard to be beautiful and intelligent, capable, and charming. The winner has been able to accomplish this.»

Valery Tytarchuk, head of the Zaliznychny regional administration of Kyiv, added, «I am very happy that my own taste has coincided with that out the nation and that my favorite newspaper Den was the winner; it is one of Ukraine’s few newspapers, which teach people to think every day.

The program is sponsored by the Bells of the Future Charitable Fund and the Philip Morris Company and chooses Ukraine’s most outstanding individuals and firms in various social, cultural, and political categories is determined by a group of experts.
