No Opposition in Ukraine?

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

In answer to a question by the anchorman from the "Seven Days" television program on the possible appointment of an opposition representative to the post of a minister, Valery Pustovoitenko declared with traditional simplicity: "What do you mean by opposition, we have no opposition forces."

Then what do we have? We can speak neither of social unity or unreserved support for Cabinet policy. The Communists clearly state their opposition. What kind of political orientation does our government have if the Communists are not in opposition to them? Here two versions are possible.

1: Looking to the coming presidential election, they give the people to understand that if we do not have any opposition to the authorities, then there are no real rivals to the President.

In this case the opposition should be alarmed. Under what conditions will the presidential election take place? Will it be an honest competition of the authorities' and opposition leaders, or will it be a no-opposition election?

2: Perhaps the government has made a deal with the opposition and Valery Pustovoitenko was simply announcing it? This sounds pretty fantastic to me, although so did the hostage taking of directors a month ago. Or is there nothing of which the Cabinet of Ministers is incapable?
