Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty
Henry M. Robert

Oleksandr Tkachenko is convinced

21 September, 1999 - 00:00

The President and his entourage are doing their best to split the Kaniv Four because the aggregate popularity of its members far exceeds that of the current President, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Oleksandr Tkachenko said in Rivne.

According to the parliamentary leader, the Kaniv accords have greatly upset Leonid Kuchma's team. Various means are being used to stir up discord among the candidates who advocate fair elections. Mr. Tkachenko is quoted by The Day's Rivne correspondent Volodymyr KONIEV as saying that forged leaflets intended to set the candidates against each other are being spread in some cities. However, the Speaker thinks, no one will manage to split the Kaniv Four. They assemble each Monday for consultations, and the Speaker did not rule out the possibility of nominating an agreed-upon single candidate for the top spot by mid-October.

Mr. Tkachenko repeated the same idea in Lutsk. Answering the question of The Day's Oleh POTURAY, he said, “It would be wrong to bet on one person as early as today. Were this done, all available resources would be mobilized to humiliate this candidate and downgrade his image in the public eye. Our opponents want to appoint, rather than elect, the president through Zlahoda and the law enforcement bodies. We are going to meet these law enforcement leaders soon and put the record straight: either they observe the law or quit their posts.”
