Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

But only one wins the UN award

21 September, 1999 - 00:00

Elmaz Appazova works as a dentist in a clinic built within the framework of the UN program. The latter's key purpose is to assist the Ukrainian and Crimean governments in what is formulated as preserving peace and stability on the peninsula by facilitating the process of accommodation and reintegration of the peoples deported from the Crimea during World War II. Project coordinators say the cooperation and assistance from rank-and-file citizens are an important factor of success, so those making the largest contribution in the struggle with poverty are annually given UN awards personally by the Secretary General, in the UN General Assembly hall.

At a news conference at the UN representation in Ukraine, September 14, UN System Coordinator Pedro Villianueva reminded journalists that the awarding ceremony commemorates the International Day of Fighting Poverty, marked October 17, and that the current decade (1997-2006) has been announced the Decade of Fighting Poverty.
