Is Parliament Ready to Surrender Volkov?

The Verkhovna Rada seconded an interpolation addressed by People's Deputies Hryhory Omelchenko and Anatoly Yermak to the General Prosecutor, concerning criminal proceedings against People's Deputy Oleksandr Volkov, and submitted to Parliament a resolution that he be stripped of parliamentary immunity, arrested, and indicted (the 100-vote barrier was surmounted). Parliament earlier set up an interim committee of inquiry to investigate foreign bank accounts opened by Ukrainian functionaries and the possibility of concealment there of officials revenues in hard currency, reports Interfax Ukraine. According to the committee, a Brussels court established that 15.83 million Belgian francs was transferred to Oleksandr Volkov's account in that country in 1993-96. The accused is the President's confidant and a key figures in his election campaign.
