Ryszard Czarnecki, Polish Minister for European Integration Affairs has announced on behalf of his government that Warsaw will require visas from citizens of Ukraine and Belarus crossing Polish border.
In this the Polish minister de facto contradicted the repeated statements by Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, then on a visit to Ukraine, that Poland will not require visas for Ukrainians until at least 2002 in conformity with a long-term agreement on being able to cross the border without visas.
Czarnecki stated that the demand of ending Ukrainians' right to cross the Polish border was set forth in the National Program of Preparation for Admission into the European Union approved by the Polish government several days ago.
