Polish-Ukrainian Collegium for United Education in Europe

16 October, 00:00

The European Collegium of Polish and Ukrainian Universities was opened in Lublin. Presidents Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland and Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine were present at the opening ceremony and promised to work for the further development of this educational institution. Shevchenko State University Rector Viktor Skopenko, Kiev-Mohyla Academy President Vyacheslav Briukhovetsky, and Lviv’s Ivan Franko State University Rector Ivan Vakarchuk subscribed to the promise of the Ukrainian president. Former vice premier, literary historian, and Academician Mykola Zhulynsky became the Collegium’s first professor from Kyiv. The future university which is to develop out of today’s Collegium will bear the honorable name of Jerzy Gedroyc, the late publisher and editor of Kultura [Culture] in Paris, a Lithuanian aristocrat by origin and Polish democrat by his views, reported Bohdan OSADCHUK, who originated this idea as early as in 1977. The book of memoirs of the Paris-based Kultura contributors on Jerzy Gedroyc was presented at Lublin Castle.
