Oleksandr Shandriuk, one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Republican Party said at a news conference in Lviv on September 7 that he intends to argue at the next party congress in favor of initiating impeachment proceedings against the President.
“Regrettably, we failed to collect the required number of signatures to place the matter on the Verkhovna Rada agenda last year,” Mr. Shandriuk told The Day’s Roman Onyshkevych, adding that he is convinced: this time things won’t be any easier. He disagrees with other national democrats who regard attacks on Kuchma as playing in the hand of anti-Ukrainian forces. In his opinion, “the President’s policy and his trying to frighten us with his threats are not the policy of a Ukrainian statesman, but of a White Guard officer.”
Mr. Shandriuk insists that he sees none other but Yevhen Marchuk as the next President: “We could argue about separate issues, but I see no other serious candidate, except him, who could beat Leonid Kuchma in the race and become a President worthy of a country such as Ukraine, a President of whom we will not feel ashamed before the rest of the world.”
