A prize for the future

PinchukArtCenter has hosted an exhibit of 21 artists nominated for an international award, the Future Generation Art Prize 2010.

The young artists’ exposition comprises both works submitted for the competition and others that were specially made for the exhibit. The exposition will remain open for the public until January 9, 2011.

When the deadline for receiving online applications passed, the selection commission, consisting of seven internationally-acclaimed experts, picked out 20 out of more than 6,000 young nominees who reside in 125 countries on different continents. The 21st nominee was Artem Volokitin, winner of the 2009 PinchukArtCenter Prize for Ukrainian under-35 artists.

The shortlist for the Future Generation Art Prize 2010 includes Ziyad Antar, Lebanon; Fikret Atay, Turkey; Cao Fei, China; Karen Sitter, Israel; Natalie Duerberg, Sweden; Simon Fujiwara, the UK; Nicholas Globo, South Africa; Clemens Hollerer, Austria; Runo Lagomarsino, Sweden; Sinthia Marcelle, Brazil; Gareth Moore, born in Canada; Mircea Nicolae, Romania; Ruben Ochoa, the US; Wilfredo Prieto Garcia, Cuba; Katarina Seda, the Czech Republic; Guido van der Werve, the Netherlands; Nico Vascellari, Italy; Jorinde Voigt, Germany; Artem Volokitin, Ukraine; Emily Wardill, the UK; and Hector Zamora, Mexico.

The honorable international jury, consisting of Daniel Birnbaum (Sweden), Okwui Enwezor (Nigeria), Yuko Hasegawa (Japan), Ivo Mesquita (Brazil), Eckhard Schneider (Germany), Robert Storr (the US), and Ai Weiwei (China), will choose and announce the winner of the main prize at the award ceremony on December 10, 2010, in Kyiv. The contest laureate will receive 60,000 dollars in cash and 40,000 dollars as a new art promotion grant.

Additionally, another 20,000 dollars will be spent on an advanced studies program for the five winners of special prizes. The reproductions of all the nominees’ works are posted on the PinchukArtCenter’s website, where visitors will be able to vote for the winner in the Public Prize nomination.
