Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

QUESTION OF The Day: Should Ukraine join NATO?

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

I have always said that NATO admits not countries but territories for deploying nuclear weapons. And if we were so "wise" as to give up our own nuclear potential, did we do it just to get somebody else's? Of course, the generals will deny this, assuring us that this is "political symbolism," nothing more. But since NATO is a reality, we should initiate an intelligent dialogue with the alliance and defend our principles of nonalignment. And if we are really a sovereign country, we will manage not to lose our position. I do not think anyone really has a great desire to join NATO: it is just political romanticism. The states currently being admitted to the alliance do not know how it will all end. I would not like to see new tectonic divides in Europe, but this cannot be ruled out. I personally consider Javier Solana an experienced politician who realizes that Ukraine's dimensions do not yet allow it to be squeezed into the NATO door. Incidentally, Solana is a Social Democrat, and before his election as Secretary General he was a vehement opponent to the alliance.
