Reforms & Order, both sections of Rukh, and the portion of the NDP
that withdrew with Anatoly Matviyenko continue talks on a single candidate.

At a Kyiv news conference on May 20 each of the representatives of these
groups voiced confidence that the democratic forces will unite around a
single candidate.

For its part, Reforms & Order's Viktor Pynzenyk declared that his
party is prepared "to make the compromises necessary for the sake of a
single candidate."

Hennady Udovenko, leader of one part of Rukh, announced that there is
a "steady" process of negotiating on a single democratic candidate, adding
that nominating a single candidate for Kyiv Mayor by all four parties is
evidence that these parties can come to terms. Previously, the capital's
Rukh organization leader Yaroslav Fedoryn stated he was withdrawing his
candidacy. "We want a single national democratic candidate to win the Kyiv
elections. And we have this candidate: Oleksandr Omelchenko," he said.

Anatoly Matviyenko says that "the part that withdrew from NDP conducts
daily talks with both Rukh sections... We are bound to get united into
a single strong political democratic party," he stresses.

The leader of the other Rukh segment, Yuri Kostenko, once again declared
his readiness to withdraw from the elections provided a "stronger single
and viable candidate" appears. He also hopes that a number of parties will
go to the polls with a single candidate, adding, "The time will come, I
am sure, when we can rally round a figure capable of defending the honor
and dignity of national democracy," reports Interfax Ukraine.
