Last Sunday thousands of Romans and guests from other cities and countries took part in a parade dedicated to the 2,764th anniversary of the foundation of Rome. The event was masterminded by the association Gruppo Storico Romano (Roman Historical Group), and visited by the mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno, a representative of the Department of Cultural Policy Gasperini Dino, and the chairman of the Commission for Culture Federico Milcone, disguised as a Roman senator for the occasion. Nearly 1,700 people, from Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Slovenia, France, and Germany (whose territories used to be provinces of the Roman Empire), wore costumes of the epoch as they joined in a pageant from the Circus Maximus to the Colosseum. In the afternoon, groups of history enthusiasts held mock battles between Roman legionaries and barbarians, gla-diator contests, and reproduced ancient dances.
According to the legend, Rome was founded on April 21, 753 B.C. by twin brothers Romulus and Remus, descendants of Aeneas, the hero of Troy.
