RUSSIAN DUMA FUNCTIONARY SAYS THERE IS NO UKRAINIAN STATE

10 March, 1998 - 00:00

Volodymyr Ohryzko, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration's foreign contacts department, actually tried to refute information about Aleksei Mitrofanov, Chairman of the Russian Duma Committee on Geopolitics, declaring "There is no such state as Ukraine" when deliberating ratification of the Russian-Ukrainian Grand Treaty. Addressing journalists, Mr. Ohryzko said: "There was no Duma hearing as such. Instead, some 160 persons gathered, among them only 8 or 10 with deputy badges, and these were not deputies of the Duma but of the former USSR Supreme Soviet. Also, several people like Tikhonov (Chairman of the Duma CIS Committee) and other characters who came to stage an anti-Ukrainian rally." His conclusion, when it came, surprised all those present: "Thus, the question is, should we bother to respond to such things?"
