UZHHOROD — Historian Fedir Shandor told The Day that the first sakura trees appeared in the city back in 1919 when Czech authorities were actively investing in the development of the Czech microdisdtrict Galagov. Most such trees are found there.

This used to be marshland, with a special microclimate that hindered the planting of many varieties, so they chose sakura. These days sakuras are planted every year.

There is even a tradition of conferring the title Man of the Year on a resident who spots the first sakura flower. The festivities will start with the opening of the Seventh International Art Festival Transcarpathian Edelweiss’12, along with a number of literary events, a parade of fairy-tale heroes, and meetings with men of letters.

On April 28, Uzhhorod OPEN 2012 international dancesport competition and the Soniachny napii (Sun Drink) festival and fair will begin.

Uzhhorod will also host a number of sports competitions and exhibits.
