Over 9,000 single shoes and sneakers covered the central Plaza de Bolivar in Colombia’s capital Bogota, in dedication to the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action (April 4). Colombia is the world’s second country, after Afghanistan, to be the most affected by antipersonnel mines. In the period between 1982 and 2011, a total of 9,135 people suffered as a result of them. The explosions killed 1,256 military men and 684 civilians. Each of the 9,135 single shoes, placed on the Plaza de Bolivar, carries the name of the municipality and department where the mine exploded, as well as the gender and social status (military, civilian, or under age) of the victims.
