Show for Guests or Oath to the People?

07 December, 00:00

Inauguration is an official state-sponsored function rather than a show for guests. Hence the presence of all People’s Deputies at this ceremony is obligatory, while the solemnity lies precisely in the fact that the President’s inauguration should have been held for the third time as traditional, that is in Verkhovna Rada. Since this did not happen, we can already record the President’s first dictatorial step.

Leonid Kuchma should clearly understand that he was elected not tsar, king, or shah, but merely the highest official in the state. The President must cast off all kingly pretensions from his practical activity. Is it not a kingly pretension to receive 3000 guests? Can Ukraine afford this luxury today?

Nobody has the right to squander the public money on revels, whether or not there is a reason for it. And if the President does so, other executives of various level will follow the suit.

I am not a Communist sympathizer, but still I would like nobody to display Bolshevik tendencies.

Verkhovna Rada is a legislative body, so its laws and resolutions (whether or not they are good in somebody’s view) are binding on all, including the President. On the other hand, all branches of power should work toward improving the laws. Failure to observe the laws by any person leads to overall collapse, which we, unfortunately, today witness in Ukraine.

PS. I am a pensioner, so I feel the poverty line to my fingertips, as they put it, while our top officials keep on staging such celebrations with or without a reason. It brings people like me to tears.
