Speaking of love through a pantomime

Kyiv will host a festival “Successors of Marcel Marceau” dedicated to the memory of the legendary French mime
21 January, 00:00

The idea is the brainchild of the advisor to the head of the International Museum of Circus Art in Japan and member of the Worldwide Convention of Clowns in England Volodymyr Kriukov, who is also the project’s director.

Marcel Marceau (real name – Marcel Mangel) gained worldwide recognition in 1947 after creating the image of Bip, a sad mime-clown. In the post-war period the artist revived the art of mummery in France, which had been pushed aside in the days of silent movies. In the 1950s and 1960s, Marceau’s company was the only pantomime group in the world and gave many tours abroad. Marceau played parts in several films, including Silent Movie and Barbarella. The French mime had also toured Ukraine, giving a triumphant performance at the festival Kyiv-Travnevy, and held a master class for young Ukrainian artists. Marceau has many admirers and successors, including Volodymyr Kriukov, who is an active promoter of the art of mummery in our country.

On February 14, the small hall of the Palace Ukraina will feature, on a single stage, celebrated comics, clowns, and other masters of the art, who have been successfully presenting their craft in various shows and circus rings. According to Kriukov, the evenings of recollection “Successors of Marcel Marceau,” which are being held for the third season, have started the revival of the art of pantomime in Ukraine. Their purpose is to attract the attention of the audiences to pantomime, and provide the possibility for Ukrainian mimes and artists, who have acquired worldwide recognition, to share their creative achievements with compatriots. The program will include mimics, comics, clowns, buffoonery miniatures, which should boost the moods of the audiences.
