Steven Pifer: Ukraine Is Important For the US

18 February, 2003 - 00:00

Steven Pifer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, former US ambassador to Ukraine, says the American government considers relations with Ukraine to be very important for the US and is ready to help it press on with democratic reforms. “The American government realizes how important Ukraine is for the US and how crucial it is for Ukraine to succeed in establishing a democratic market economy state closely linked to Europe,” Mr. Pifer emphasized. According to him, the American government “has just thoroughly reconsidered its policy towards Ukraine”. “It is still in our interests that Ukraine change the pace of democratic reforms,” the diplomat pointed out. Answering a question, Mr. Pifer claimed the US government had “shelved” the issue of Kolchuga radar sales to Iraq so that “this problem does not mar the US-Ukrainian relations.”
