Locals often find antiquities on the surface

At the homeland of the first Ukrainian book, the village of Peresopnytsia in the region of Rivne the excavations are in progress. Except professional archeologists their participants include members of the local Palace of Children and Youth. The land of annalistic Peresopnytsia hides a lot of mysteries and the location of the Prechystensky monastery where the first Ukrainian book was finished is among them. Meanwhile, when working on a little-investigated place the scientists have found a round outhouse of the princely age. Specialists assure: there is a whole complex of ancient dwellings. They have found ceramic fragments, bone, metal goods and women’s jewelries at the archeological site, a fragment of a glass bracelet among them. “Only wealthy citizens could afford such jewelry. Actually, such finds are the evidence of a developed princely city and the living standards there,” the archeologist Vasyl CHEKURKOV said. “I would like to emphasize that the cultural layer is in a very good condition there.”

However, the locals often find antiquities without any excavations. One of the recent finds is a diamond-shaped bronze fibula. In princely times it was usually worn as a brooch buckle for cloaks. This fibula is unique because it is completely preserved. Usually archeologists find only fragments of fibulas. In Peresopnytsia the fibula was found on the territory of the princely city, so the jewelry must have belonged to a boyarynia. “Now the museum has opened an exhibit of ancient women’s jewelries. It has been made of local finds: rings, bracelets and pendants,” the director of the cultural and archeological center Peresopnytsia Mykola Fedoryshyn told The Day. “The cultural layer is very rich here. We find lots of things on the surface.”
