Tatars protest Crimea vote

31 March, 1998 - 00:00

Exiled from their native Crimea in 1944 and fighting to return for decades on end, Crimean Tatars were told that they were not citizens and would not be allowed to vote. A March 28 protest meeting called by Meijlis leader Mustafa Dzhmiliev was met with a show of force by the local military: fifty tanks and thousands of law enforcement officers. Elections took place the following day without demonstrations. The Communists won convincingly.
