Ukrainian athletes performed brilliantly at the European championship in light athletics held in Valencia, Spain. 25 year-old Kyiv native Anzhela Balakhonova became a true heroine. In the pole vault she not only took first place but set a new indoor world record of 4.45 meters.
Serhiy Osovych of Ivano-Frankivsk won the 200 meter dash in 20.4 seconds. Oleksiy Lukashevych of Dnipropetrovsk came in third in the brad jump at 8.04 meters.
Vita Pavlysh of Kharkiv did less well in the shot put. In the absence of German favorite and world champion Kumbernuss, great hopes were placed in her, but she came in second with twenty meters to Russia's Irina Korzhanenko with 20.25.
