Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Trojan Horse Being Built In the Shadows

Ukrainian periodicals have broached the subject of the
Speaker biding his time planning to enter the presidential campaign, contrary
to all assurances to Leonid Kuchma.

Each passing day seems to offer fresh evidence to this effect. Now the
Chief Executive criticizes the Speaker, not Parliament as a whole, and
the Speaker allows People's Deputy Moiseyenko twenty minutes of Parliament
time to dwell on the need to initiate impeachment proceedings (Verkhovna
Rada analysts regard this as the beginning of the election campaign).

Not so long ago, former President Leonid Kravchuk joined in the anti-Tkachenko
choir, stressing that the "implementation of his political platform may
cause Ukraine to lose its independence." After setting up Zlahoda, Mr.
Kravchuk told a news conference: "At present, the Ukrainian state is faced
with a serious threat. Unfortunately, Verkhovna Rada and its leadership
are trumpeting this threat, and I mean the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada
in the first place."

Mykola Novosad, head of parliamentary press service, told The Day's
Iryna HAVRYLOVA, that the Speaker will not respond to Mr. Kravchuk,
not yet, and that Deputy Dovhan of the Peasant Party said everything that
need be said on the matter.

In a word, a long-anticipated conflict is becoming a reality.

Tkachenko's prospects.
