Ukraine Wants EU to Participate in Demarcating Borders with Moldova

23 October, 00:00

The problem of establishing joint control on Ukraine-Moldova border checkpoints is to be addressed in conjunction with Russia, Transnistria, and the OSCE. Interfax reports that an agreement to this effect was reached during the Ukrainian-Moldovan inter-parliamentary negotiations when Ukrainian Prime Minister Anatoly Kinakh was visiting Chisinau. According to Mr. Kinakh, Kyiv and Chisinau are to ask the European Union and relevant European institutions to participate in settling the issue of technical demarcation of the Ukrainian- Moldovan border and to redouble efforts to “create more effective” security conditions on this border. This is necessary due to the latest tragic events in the USA, he added.

The solution of the Ukrainian-Moldovan border problem requires strict observation of the corresponding international practices and bilateral agreements to be further coordinated between all the sides, particularly with Transnistrian representatives, Mr. Kinakh explained. According to him, Ukraine will strictly and consistently maintain the fundamental principle of the territorial integrity of Moldova. “This issue is an indispensable condition for the development of European integration.”

In the course of negotiations, the chiefs of Odesa, Chernivtsi and Vinnytsia oblasts of Ukraine and of seven Moldovan districts set up a standing council of the both countries’ regional chiefs with the aim of solving border cooperation problems. In the nearest future Ukraine and Moldova will conduct multilateral consultations in order to combat smuggling, illegal migration, drug trafficking, and acts of international terrorism. During his visit, Premiers Anatoly Kinakh and Vasile Tarlev opened the new building of the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau. On Saturday Kinakh visited his native village Bratusani in the Yedynetsia district of Moldova and presented a television set and a satellite antenna to his former school. No Ukrainian public funds were involved in the gift, the Ukrainian prime minister pointed out.
