On Sunday, the strongest cohort of the Ukrainian Army, the Armored Troops, celebrated Tank Driver’s Day. Defense Minister Oleksandr Kuzmuk says the tank is destined to be the universal weapon of the twenty-first century.
True, elsewhere in the world experts strongly believe that armored vehicles have become obsolete in general, and that in future warfare (if any) very different weapons will be employed. Well, Ukraine cannot afford hi-tech hostilities anyway, hence probably its being placed third in terms of tanks among the 30 European member states of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces. According to The Military Balance ‘98, the British statistical edition of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Ukraine has 4,063 such armored vehicles - mostly T-64 (2,282), T-72 (1,304), and 322 most up-to-date T-80 tanks.
