Ukrainian Canyon Enters World Heritage List

03 February, 00:00

Last Wednesday a workgroup of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) experts left Kamyanets-Podilsky. “Hans Caspari (France), Regina Mayerhofer (Germany), architect Jaroslav Kilian (Slovakia), and secretary of Ukraine’s National Committee on UNESCO Oleksandr Melnychenko who accompanied them were deeply impressed with the winter view of the Smotrych River Canyon,” head of the organization and controls department of the city executive committee Valery Klymenko told The Day. The guests said that the Cultural Landscape of the Smotrych River Canyon in the City of Kamyanets-Podilsky document is on the top line in the waiting list for being included unto the UNESCO World Heritage List. The nature, never repeating itself in its creations, has given us only one similar canyon, the one in the United States. There is no third one throughout the globe. From the breathtaking heights of the Smotrych rocky bank one can see the old fortress and other architectural monuments. The view exceeds even the most rich and original human fantasies. Thus, the canyon that gives inspiration to artists and poets will be soon included in the World Heritage List, reports The Day’s Mykhailo VASYLEVSKY.
