UKRAINIAN GYPSIES HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN THEIR COMPENSATION

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The Swiss fund for the needy victims of the Holocaust has approved allocation of financial aid in the amount of $1,000 to those Gypsies who during World War II suffered Nazi persecution in Ukraine. Both Gypsies of Ukrainian citizenship and those who were born or lived in Ukraine during the war are entitled to financial aid. Only living Gypsies will get the money. According to The Day reporter Olena Hrinchenko, the aid is not meant for the descendants of deceased Gypsies.

This way, the Gypsies have found themselves in a situation that is both better and worse than the situation with the Jews: on the one hand, the young, who are "concerned" about the dead, will get nothing, and on the other – money will go directly to the victims rather than some Gypsy organizations.
