Ukrainian Military Happy to Cooperate With Russians

29 December, 00:00
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksandr Kuzmuk signed a 1999 bilateral cooperation plan in the military sphere with his Russian counterpart Igor Sergeyev, Interfax Ukraine reports. The document stipulates 30 bilateral military projects, including two joint naval exercises.

Mr. Kuzmuk, arriving with other colleagues to attend a CIS Council of Defense Ministers, condemned the US-UK missile attacks on Iraq. His statement about Ukraine taking a "calm attitude" to NATO's eastward expansion program was received rather coolly by Moscow. It is common knowledge, however, that Ukraine does not intend to join the North Atlantic Alliance at present, Mr. Kuzmuk added, obviously trying to assuage Russian fears.
