Ukrainian Peacekeepers Help Their Polish Counterparts

22 June, 2004 - 00:00

Ukrainian and Polish peacekeepers in Iraq jointly repelled an attack on a Polish military unit that was guarding a bridge near Es-Suveir. The Polish peacekeepers were attacked with mortar and small arms fire last Thursday, reports Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense press service. The duty shift on the observation post at the Ukrainian battalion’s field camp immediately reported the incident to the commanding officer, Lt.-Col. Oleksandr Strelenko, who gave the order to come to the immediate rescue of his Polish comrades-in-arms. The Ukrainian peacekeepers opened intense fire with the AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher and the BTR-80 APC’s regular weapons at the area from where the attackers were shooting. The attack was repulsed.
