A press conference dedicated to fifth anniversary of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology was held last Tuesday in Kiev-Mohyla Academy. The KIIS conducts monitoring of voters’ political orientation, problems of the poor in Ukraine, secures soft and hardware for surveys, and conducts various analyses.

Cooperation with foreign scientific centers and commercial research grants make it possible for KIIS to carry out its research programs. Though according to KIIS general director Professor Volodymyr Paniotto, it is quite difficult to combine commercial research with scientific activity.

Interesting data was made public at the conference. For instance, according to KIIS estimates, 33% of Ukrainian families (17 million people) are poor, from which 13% are poor according to Ukrainian, not European, standards. Moreover, the financial status of most families would not allow them to weather any serious social or economic crisis.
