"Every third young family broke up in Ukraine between 1994 and 1996,"
Chairwoman of the Family and Women Research Center in the Institute of
Sociological Research Yuliya Yakubova pointed out at the presentation of
the research project, The Young Family in the Nineties. The research began
in 1994 and will continue until 2015. 4000 young respondents under 24 from
eleven regions of Ukraine have been surveyed. According to sociologists,
the country's unstable economic situation is the main reason for young
families' breakup. Most young families (67%) are uncertain of their future.
66.2% of those surveyed do not have housing of their own. 42.5% do not
always have enough money for proper nutrition. 39% receive help from their
parents, and 20% are fully supported by their parents. As a rule, young
families do not want to have children in this situation. According to the
survey, only 19% of young families are certain that they will want to have
children later. Last year, 46.7% of 1000 women surveyed between 15 and
49 years of age were forced to have an abortion.
