US National Guard Issued Ukrainian Kalashnikovs

A joint Ukrainian-US (California) National Guard exercise started on August 4 at Chuhuiv, a town near Kharkiv. Held within the Partnership for Peace framework, it stipulates a week-long course of training to elaborate on joint special commando units' actions in an emergency, polishing anti-terrorist and rescue mission techniques.

The Americans arrived in Kharkiv without any equipment, even without sidearms. One of the newsworthy elements of the opening ceremony was handing the US commando men Ukrainian Kalashnikovs. Colonel Volodymyr Soimin, CO of the Guard Division concerned, informed that Hr 12,000 was transferred to the division's account from the US to facilitate the joint exercise. The Kharkiv oblast regional state administration contributed Hr 30,000. In addition, the project is sponsored by Obolon, Rosynka, and Coca-Cola.
