Valeria Lutkovska got an urgent job

The top news of April 24 had to be the election of the new Commissioner for Human Rights. But things turned out differently
26 April, 00:00

It seemed that after Yulia Tymoshenko and Yurii Lutsenko were arrested there was nothing left that could surprise or shock. But they managed to do it again and again. Now the appeal of Oleksandr Tymoshenko to the world’s leaders to protect his wife from physical violence does not seem in any way an exaggeration or a hyperbole, but instead looks like a totally adequate statement.

The top news of April 24 had to be the election of the new Commissioner for Human Rights. But things turned out differently. The news reported in the afternoon put the rest into the shade.

“Convoy kicked Tymoshenko in her stomach and now she has a hematoma there, they also twisted her hands. I officially declare this,” said BYuT member Serhii Pashynsky from the tribune in the Parliament. According to him, Tymoshenko filed her report on beating already on Monday April 23. Part of the BYuT-Batkivshchyna fraction deputies immediately blocked the presidium of the Verkhovna Rada.

Then there was more. In about 10 minutes it was reported that Tymoshenko announced hunger strike. The journalists found out about this from Serhii Vlasenko. However, the prisoners said that this hunger strike is not real. “Hunger strike is real when there is a written statement about it.” Then mass media got the primary source – a letter from Tymoshenko herself.

“Around 9 p.m. my neighbor was led out of the cell and after a while three tough men came in. They came up to my bed, threw a sheet on me, started pulling me from the bed all together applying brute physical force. From pain and despair I tried to defend myself the best I could and was brutally punched in my stomach with a fist. They twisted my arms and legs, then lifted me and pulled in the sheet to the street. I thought those were my last moments,” wrote Tymoshenko.

According to her, from unbearable back pain and fear she began screaming and crying for help but no one responded to that. “At some point, because of the terrible pain I passed out and came back to life already in a hospital room,” she stressed.

Tymoshenko also noted that in a state of extreme fear she refused to communicate with anyone until she had a chance to meet with her defender. “The next day I gave up eating. However, I didn’t meet with my lawyer that day.”

The Prosecutor’s Office in Kharkiv admitted that Tymoshenko was taken to the hospital by force. However, the Office stated: “The examination did not confirm that Tymoshenko was hit in the stomach and her arms and legs were twisted during the transportation.”

Who should we believe? Where is truth and where is lie? On the one hand, why did prisoners have to beat the small, fragile woman, who could be easily taken out on hand if needed? On the other hand, two cleaning days in colony and the fact that Vlasenko could not meet with Tymoshenko right away seem very suspicious.

But if the fact of beating Tymoshenko is really true, then the prisoners in Kachanivska colony obviously have problems with adequacy and the sense of self-preservation.

Apparently, one thing can be said for sure in this dark and dubious story. The new ombudswoman Valeria Lutkovska got an urgent and difficult job of finding out what is happening.
