Volodymyr Klychko to Fight Rematch Next Summer

8 December, 1998 - 00:00

Volodymyr Klychko will have a return fight against American-born Purity
next summer. Yesterday Volodymyr Klychko himself announced this. The day
before yesterday brought the most unexpected surprise breaking the Klychko
brothers' unprecedented string of victories in the professional ring. The
experienced 34 year-old Afro-American pugilist had a sparring with Lennox
Lewis behind him. Yet Volodymyr was stronger. However, the American fully
used his best qualities: the ability to take a punch and patience. In addition,
the wrong tactics chosen by Volodymyr's opponent affected him. Wanting
to do everything possible to win the fight by knockout, he attacked much
and gradually lost his strength. But there is no sports without defeat.

Vitaly Klychko fully avenged his brother by knocking out Spinelli of
Italy in the first round and retaining the Europe Championship belt.

Many famous people associated with sports could be seen at the match.

Klaus-Peter Kohl, promoter general of the international club Universum
Box-promotion:

"Volodymyr has nothing to be ashamed of despite his defeat. Sports is
sports. There are no victories without defeats. Volodymyr performed great
boxing skills and I still consider him one of today's most talented boxers."

Fritz ZDUNEK, Klychko brothers' coach:

I cannot say Volodymyr underestimated his opponent. The Ukrainian athlete
kept the initiative for ten rounds. I think that it was the psychological
factor which disturbed him. The both brothers wanted to thank their native
city with victories; this desire to win broke Volodymyr.

Ross PURITY, Intercontinental Champion in WBC version, Volodymyr's
opponent:

I am thankful to Mr. Kohl for inviting me to fight against such a good
boxer as Volodymyr Klychko. He is a real fighter. I won, but my head is
splitting.

Francesco SPINELLI, Vitaly's opponent:

I would like to wish Volodymyr a speedy recovery. I also congratulate
Ross Purity with the victory. There is nothing I can say about my own fight
for it ended too quickly.
