WAR VETERANS: STILL CARED FOR?

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

How many World War II veterans die annually in Ukraine? No one keeps this sad record. Statistically, there are 5,200,000 living in this country, of whom 1,300,000 fought at the front and 320,000 were crippled in the war. In 15-20 years their number will match that of WW I survivos...

Prior to V-E Day (May 9), the Prime Minister received a delegation led by Fedir Ishchenko, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Veterans Organizations of Ukraine. The visitors asked about back pensions and free public transport (which had suddenly become commercial). Mr. Pustovoitenko told them about Ukraine’s grave economic condition, explaining that this was the main reason for delays. All he could promise was that he would not sign any decree curbing their existing privileges.

Most still refer to World War II in Ukraine (and elsewhere in the CIS) as the Great Patriotic War for the Fatherland. To make up to people for what they suffered in it something dramatic should be done. As it is, there is every indication that no lessons of that war have been learned.
