Watch out for our guys!

After the bout between IBF world champion Wladimir Klitschko and Lamon Brewster virtually all heavyweight boxers are refusing to fight Wladimir. So Vitali, the younger Klitschko, has to wait until he can meet the winner of the Ibragimov-Chagaev fight in the ring. Vitali says he is ready to fight anyone who is willing-provided, of course, that the opponent is interesting to him and the audience. But again, he thinks that there are only a few heavyweights worthy of standing in the ring with him.

This was what Wladimir said on July 20, 2007, at a press conference in the entertainment complex Arena-City in Kyiv. Vitalii came to the press conference alone, with his left hand in a cast. “This is the result of the bout with Brewster,” he explained. “My hand was injured in the first round, but I hardly felt any pain and there was no way I was going to quit. This fight was extremely important for me because Brewster tainted my career a little, and all this time the thought of a rematch has been on my mind. So, no injury during the fight could stand in the way of my victory. Now, of course, it feels a bit awkward to be walking around in a cast, but in three weeks I’ll be able to take it off.”

Wladimir said that he feels he is “not yet at the top but higher than others.” Past 30, he feels great, and he is moving faster than ever in the ring. Now his goal is to fight for the absolute championship with the champion title-holder of another organization, and he also wants to see his brother Vitali as a concurrent world champion. “To be world champions at the same time but in different organizations is the main goal and dream of the Klitschko brothers,” said Wladimir repeating the already familiar dictum.

“Lately, our goal was constantly moving away from us, but now we have every chance, like never before, to make this dream come true. Ibragimov and Chagaev will fight in Moscow in October. The winner will be contacted by my promoters and they will negotiate the unifying match. At the same time I welcome my brother’s return to professional boxing and invite everyone to support him during his fight against Jameel McCline in Munich.”

On the subject of politics, Wladimir assured everyone that he is not going to participate in Ukraine’s domestic political life. However, he is convinced that even though the situation in Ukraine is difficult, the president knows what he is doing, and the results of his activity will become obvious right after the elections.

Klitschko refused to name a favorite political force. He believes that by representing Ukraine abroad every athlete is promoting our country and sending a certain political message. “Vitali and I are already doing something for the good of the country: we are developing children’s sports, preventing youth prostitution, and organizing charity events. The goal of our Klitschko Charitable Foundation, which cooperates with UNESCO, is to continue implementing various charity projects around the world. This September we are going to Namibia and Eastern Europe. Within UNESCO we will also be promoting the idea of implementing a similar project in Ukraine,” the famous Ukrainian boxer said.
