Sept. 22 1943: The Soviet Southwestern and Southern fronts complete their Donbas offensive, which results in the liberation of this region.

Sept. 23 1919:A joint session of the Directory and the governments of the Ukrainian National Republic and the Western Ukrainian National Republic resolves to commence immediate hostilities against Denikin’s army.

Sept. 24 1993: A treaty setting up the Economic Union of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is signed in Moscow. Ukraine declares it will cooperate as an associate member.

Sept. 26 1995: A resolution on Ukraine’s membership is adopted during a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Sept. 27 1906: The first issue of Ukraine’s daily newspaper Rada comes off the presses in Kyiv.

Sept. 28 1916:Higher Medical Courses for Women open in Katerynoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk).
